Saltbush Cottage
Shortstays & Cooking Workshops
Your Home away from Home
Having spent many jarfull moments in this cosy cottage by the beach located in South Walyalup (Fremantle), Saltbush Cottage is now available for short stays as your “home away from home” when visiting Boorloo (Perth) or for a local staycation on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja.
Forage & Savour
Saltbush Cottage is easily recognisable for its white picket fence and surrounding edible foliage – including the dominating lillypilly hedge, ruby saltbush shrub, native thyme, sea purslane, old man saltbush and very happy passionfruit vine. You can feel free to forage and savour the fruits and berries when in-season. Experiment and taste the different types of saltbush, which just love the local sandy soil!
HOME is where the HEARTh is
The kitchen hearth is the heart of Saltbush Cottage and the tiles in the original fireplace above the stovetop having been designed to emulate the curves of the old man saltbush outside.
Consider a Cooking Workshop
I love to share cooking ideas sourced from the edible garden or local bulk foods store, so will happily provide plant-based recipes, conduct a private cooking workshop or even prepare a weekend breakfast, wine and cheese platter for the verandah, or beach picnic for you upon special request in advance. Why not learn how to make your very own saltbush furikake straight from the shrub! For longer stays, I can even show you how to culture your own cashew cheese to slow ferment in the custom cheese cave (aka wine fridge).
Sustainable Stays
In keeping with a desire to promote a way of living that is sustainable for the planet and all of its inhabitants, the cottage provides oat milk in the fridge and seeks to source and re-stock the essential toiletries and kitchen products for your stay with as minimal environmental footprint as possible and purchasing in bulk.
Homely Comforts
The entire home will be yours to enjoy during your stay. There are two comfortable bedrooms with queen-sized beds, two bathrooms (one with bath & a view out to the old Eucalyptus when the louvres are open), plus a hot water outdoor shower to enjoy showering outdoors all year round.
Site of the Old Canteen
Being on the site of the “Old Canteen” for the previous Mills & Wares biscuit factory, the cottage is now located amidst a vibrant strip of artisan bakeries, cafes, restaurants, galleries, pubs and boutique bars. One of the joys of the property is sitting on the West-facing verandah during sunset and watching the world go by – hidden behind the fence and foliage, but with peeks out to life out to the street – and the option to join in within seconds!
